Product Notes: Beach Born Sun Balm

These are my notes on products I use. These are basically reviews but I stop short of calling them such because I am not a professional reviewer and so these are simply my personal notes on these products.

I have been quite content with the lip balms I have been using, until one day, I suddenly had a need to find a lip balm with SPF. I just felt that I should also be giving my lips some protection from the sun. This is why I used a Carmex lip balm even though I was really happy with my Burt’s Bees lip balm. However, I forgot to check the ingredients of the Carmex lip balm before I bought it and when I did, I was disappointed to see that I didn’t really like its main ingredient for sun protection. Thus, even though it was okay and I used it up, my hunt for a lip balm with SPF continued.

One lip balm that seemed to have what I wanted is the Beach Born Sun Balm. It looked like it had natural ingredients, nothing that spooked me outright, and it was also very affordable.

Unfortunately, and spoiler alert, but it looks like my search will continue on. While I think this balm is okay, it isn’t something I am likely to repurchase. This balm is waxy, harder than the Carmex lip balm I was previously using and was used to, even with the Burt’s Bees lip balm I was using before that. It also has a bubblegum kind of scent, but the balm tastes a bit tarte, if that makes sense, so it’s not too sweet. Looking at the ingredients, the scent is explained by the bubblegum flavor.

While I don’t mind that it is quite waxy and hard, ultimately this balm doesn’t really feel hydrating. This becomes an issue especially since my lips have become drier than what I think is usual so I really need the moisture and not just what feels like something to lock in moisture. I also don’t think this wears well under lipstick for me, as it made even my Maybelline powder matte lipstick look flaky on my lips, and while that lipstick is a matte formula, that doesn’t really happen with me.

I was able to make it work somewhat, but at the end of the day I don’t think this just is the product I was looking for. I tried to keep it in my kikay kit but I ended up taking it out and just use it on days when I don’t think I’ll wear a lippie so that my lips have some sort of protection from the sun. Maybe that really is what the product is for, a sunscreen for the lips. However, I’d like to have some hydration while I’m at it, and since I think there’s a product that can provide both moisture and protection, my hunt goes on, and I won’t be repurchasing this after I use it up.

Will I recommend this product? I don’t think it’s a bad product, and maybe it really is more of a sun protection balm, so if you’re looking for that, perhaps as something to use while you’re at the beach, then this is okay. I haven’t tried to use it at the beach since I haven’t been to a beach in forever, but it may work for that. But if you’re like me and you have chapped lips and want to address that with some additional protection from the sun, then this may not be the one for you as well.

Do you have any recommendation for a good lip balm with SPF? Please let me know if you do!

P.S. If you want to check this product out, I bought it here at BeautyMnl, but you can also check out their website here.
